Charles Bain Smith
Charles is Head of Building Surveying and an RIBA-accredited Specialist Conservation Architect, as well as a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
His expertise spans historic building conservation, building surveying, defect diagnosis, condition assessments, conservation management, heritage asset stewardship, and the repair and adaptation of complex historic structures.
His commitment to heritage began in early childhood, shaped by witnessing the loss of historic buildings and developing a lifelong sensitivity to the spirit of place.
Grounded in craftsmanship, material understanding, and hands-on site experience, Charles combines technical surveying expertise with practical conservation knowledge. Having worked in conservation contracting, local authorities, and specialist conservation practice, Charles brings a broad perspective to the care of the built environment. Formerly a National Specialist Building Consultant for The National Trust, he has advised on the conservation, maintenance, and long-term management of nationally significant historic buildings and estates.
Today, Charles leads building surveying services with a strategic, humane approach to conservation, protecting not only the physical fabric of buildings but also the character, significance, and sense of place that make historic environments endure for future generations.
