Consents granted for the Abbey of St Edmund, Reborn project

A major milestone for the Abbey of St Edmund, Reborn project has been reached with the successful approval of all consents for this ambitious project.

The proposed scheme reunifies the fragmented 60-acre Abbey of St Edmund site, creating a coherent, accessible and sustainable ‘placemaking’ cultural destination.

The secured consents include a planning application, listed building consent, Scheduled Monument Consent, Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England consent and a number of relevant ecclesiastical approvals.

The decision marks a significant step forward for the wider heritage initiative, which has been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund with a development grant. The delivery phase grant application was submitted in February this year. The project is led by St Edmundsbury Cathedral, West Suffolk Council and English Heritage, who have come together as members of the Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership (comprising 29 organisations and individuals who care about the Abbey).

"This is a major step forward for the project. We have been working with an incredible team of specialists for around 18 months to bring us to this point, especially conservation architects Purcell and interpretation designers RFA Design.”

– The Very Reverend Joe Hawes, Dean, St Edmundsbury

At the heart of the proposals is a new visitor centre within the Cathedral precinct, designed to serve as a welcoming gateway to the Abbey grounds with community at the forefront of design. Purcell has been appointed as architect and lead consultant, coordinating a large multidisciplinary design team to bring the vision to life.

The wider scheme incorporates extensive benefits for the community, such as conserving the Abbey ruins, ecological and biodiversity improvements, additional habitats and wildflower planting, whilst also improving accessibility through connected pathways around the grounds.

With consent now secured for the visitor centre, the Abbey of St Edmund, Reborn project moves closer to transforming the Abbey precinct into a connected, accessible and vibrant cultural landscape, bringing together history, community and nature in the heart of Bury St Edmunds for generations to come.
