Modernising Hong Kong’s iconic hillside ride

Introduction

We were commissioned by the Peak Tramway Company Limited to report on the integrity of one of the Bridges (No. 7) architectural finishes and notably eight massive granite piers.

Formed by The Hong Kong High Level Tramways Company in 1888, the first Peak Tram carriages were originally powered by coal-fired steam boilers. At the time, it was the first cable funicular in Asia, extending 1,35km and connecting five intermediate stations. Now a sixth generation design, the new-and-improved tram cars have remained sympathetic to their historic predecessors, continuing to transport 120 passengers to and from one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist lookouts at the top of the Peak, and the stunning view of Victoria Harbour.

Assessing and enhancing historic transport link

This commission related to the proposed engineering enhancements planned around the bridge, which is located near the Barker Road Station and was part of significant modernisation works undertaken to the terminus, track, and various structures along it, to meet with the demands of the 21st century, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this iconic mode of transport.
