Enhancing excellence

Introduction

We were appointed as architects and lead design consultant for the extensive transformation of the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, one of London’s most distinguished five-star hotels. The ambitious renewal programme has redefined the guest experience while respecting the heritage and prestige of this iconic address.

In 2024, it was given a Michelin Key - the equivalent of Michelin Stars for hotels.

Renewal at scale

This was a complete refurbishment of the Knightsbridge hotel, including 181 rooms and suites, as well as the public spaces, restaurants, spa, and reception. The hotel remained in occupation and use throughout the refurbishment. As well as the restoration, the project also introduced a new rooftop level to the Hyde Park Wing, creating two Presidential Suites with uninterrupted views across Hyde Park. The addition not only expanded the hotel’s offering but also demonstrated how contemporary luxury can be elegantly integrated into a historic building.

Designing solutions around the guest experience

Successfully completing the in-use refurbishment required meticulous planning and execution to maintain the discretion and tranquillity expected by guests. Every phase of design and delivery had to consider live operations, from limiting disruption to sequencing site activities with precision.

Our approach was solution-led and collaborative, engaging closely with the client, contractors and hotel’s teams. Fast-track construction methods, just-in-time deliveries and pre-fabricated components all enabled progress without compromising craftsmanship or finish.

Crafted interventions and integrated design

Externally, the façade underwent careful repair and cleaning to restore its visual prominence from both the Knightsbridge and Hyde Park frontages. New high-performance windows were installed throughout, improving thermal and acoustic performance without altering the building’s character.

Internally, the hotel’s interiors were redesigned to meet the expectations of contemporary luxury travellers. A cohesive design strategy ensured consistency of detail and quality across a vast array of spaces, from dining rooms and lounges to wellness areas. We worked in close collaboration with the appointed interior designers to ensure full and careful coordination of the sophisticated interiors.

Dramatic additions and brand intelligence

The new rooftop suites represent the pinnacle of international luxury hospitality. Designed as two individual retreats or one combined Grand Suite, the spaces include private dining, lounge areas and expansive terraces. Each suite is independently serviced, offering complete privacy and comfort. By reconfiguring plant zones and relocating equipment, we unlocked the potential for this dramatic addition without compromising the servicing of the complete hotel.

This complex and high-profile project demanded not only technical rigour and design flair, but a deep understanding of the client’s brand and the operational realities of luxury hospitality. The result is a rejuvenated hotel that preserves its legacy while  remaining relevant and a highly desirable destination within a competitive London hotel market. This resulted in the hotel being one of only fourteen UK hotels being awarded three Michelin Keys in the inaugural listing in 2024.
