Revitalisation of a Declared Monument

Introduction

We have been engaged by Lead Architect, Ivanho Architect Ltd, as the Heritage Conservation Consultant for the revitalisation of King Yin Lei, a Declared Monument in Hong Kong.

From historic mansion to healthy living centre

This ambitious project involves repurposing this rare building, which beautifully merges art and architecture from both Chinese and Western cultures, into a Healthy Living Centre inspired by Pu’er Tea and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Our Hong Kong team are working closely with the Tianda Institute and wider consultant team to realise an ambitious vision to adapt this distinct and historic mansion, which has stood vacant since 2018.

Under Batch VI of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme (“Revitalisation Scheme”), funded by the Government of HKSAR, this project signifies a commendable effort to preserve and adapt Hong Kong’s historic structures.

King Yin Lei seamlessly blends architecture with art, and this latest adaptive reuse project demonstrates how historic assets can be given renewed relevance. By evolving from its residential roots into a healthy living centre, the site establishes a new narrative that minimises environmental impact while cultivating new associations with the place. It offers a powerful example of how conservation, when placed at the heart of decision‑making, can unlock compatible and creative solutions—ensuring even our most significant heritage sites continue to inspire and serve future generations.

– Steve Phillips, Partner, Purcell

Now open to the public, King Yin Lei stands not just as a preserved landmark but as a living heritage site, inviting visitors to step inside, explore its restored spaces, and experience the history and craftsmanship of this rare Hong Kong treasure.
