Government House Sydney

Managing conservation for a listed vice-regal residence

Introduction

Situated within the northern end of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, just to the south of the Sydney Opera House, the city's heritage listed Government House and its surrounding buildings is the official residence and office of the Governor of New South Wales.

We were engaged by the Office of the Governor to prepare a revision and update to the 1997 Government House Sydney Conservation Management Plan.

Planning for repair, maintenance, and future change

The highly significant complex of buildings and collections at Government House Sydney required clear strategies to guide its use, address emerging issues, and support proposals for sensitive change. We developed a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan to guide the conservation, maintenance, repair, and ongoing management of the site.

Informed by detailed historical research and on-site investigation, the plan helps those responsible for the property to understand its heritage significance and manage change in a sensitive and informed way.

We led a multi-disciplinary team to develop a Conservation Management Plan that reflects the full significance of the place, with particular attention to its collections. This required input from specialists in architecture, Aboriginal cultural heritage, archaeology, cultural landscapes, and collections management.

A key part of the project’s success was the ability to bring together these diverse areas of expertise into a cohesive, practical plan—one that could be readily implemented by those responsible for the site’s care, management, and conservation.
