Goat Island

Supporting its return to Aboriginal ownership

Introduction

Part of Sydney Harbour National Park, Goat Island is recognised for its rich array of Aboriginal, historic, and natural heritage values, including over 30 buildings and structures dating from the 1830s to the 1960s.

We were engaged by New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) to support a project to transfer the Island back to Aboriginal ownership and management.

Understanding the precinct

To understand the condition of the buildings and structures within the Magazine Precinct, we prepared a comprehensive condition assessment and recommendations, assessing the condition of 26 buildings, structures, and essential services.

This plan delved into the intricacies of each structure, evaluating their state of preservation, and is to be used to estimate the costs involved in restoration and remediation efforts.

We were then commissioned to undertake tender and construction documentation for the conservation and upgrade of the dilapidated boat shed structure, located on the island’s foreshore.

Conserving heritage

We provided heritage architect services during the construction phase, including client and contractor liaison and advice, site inspection and progress reviews of works completed.

A condition report recommended the conservation of specific elements, highlighting those requiring urgent repair and prioritising necessary works. This emphasised the need for continued use of traditional materials and conservation techniques.

This initiative not only underscores our commitment to heritage conservation but also acknowledges the significance of indigenous custodianship.

Through collaborative efforts with NPWS and a deep respect for the island’s historical and cultural importance, the project supports the future sustainable heritage management of the place.
