Delapré Abbey

Reviving a heritage asset for public use and enjoyment
Delapré Abbey is a notable heritage site on the edge of Northampton. Originally founded as a 12th century convent, it later became a grand country house in the 16th century. Over time, the building fell into disrepair and much of it was closed to the public.
In 2012, Purcell was appointed by Northampton Borough Council to lead a major regeneration of the Abbey and its surrounding estate. Our role included conservation, design, and helping to secure essential funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Sensitive restoration and visitor experience
The project involved extensive repairs to the abbey’s roofs and structure, and the restoration of key historic interiors for public and event use. A new catering facility was created within the restored billiard room and a sensitively designed conservatory extension.
The 18th-century stables were transformed into a welcoming visitor hub with a café, shop, learning spaces, and accessible WCs. A nearby coach house was converted into dedicated community and education rooms.
These new spaces were carefully planned to support flexible, independent use—allowing for events and activities to continue outside standard opening hours. This flexibility helps the site generate income, supporting the abbey’s long-term care and financial sustainability.
Working closely with exhibition and lighting designers, we helped develop a new visitor route through the beautifully panelled 16th- and 17th-century rooms in the abbey’s north and east ranges. This has significantly enhanced the way people engage with the site’s rich history.

Sustainable future for a heritage asset
Completed in 2017, the project has brought Delapré Abbey back to life as a vibrant destination for learning, events, and heritage. The restored site now welcomes visitors year-round and stands as a proud example of how careful conservation and thoughtful design can secure a historic building’s future.
