Barts North Wing wins RICS National Heritage Award

Our transformation of the Grade I-listed North Wing at St Bart’s Hospital has won the RICS Heritage Award at the 2026 RICS Grand Final.

Delivered in partnership with Barts Heritage, the landmark restoration has safeguarded one of London’s most significant eighteenth-century interiors, including the magnificent Great Hall and Hogarth Stair, home to William Hogarth’s monumental paintings.

At the heart of the project is a celebration of traditional craftsmanship and specialist conservation skills. From the meticulous restoration of historic plasterwork and decorative finishes to the conservation of Hogarth’s paintings, the project brought together skilled craftspeople and conservation specialists to protect the building’s  architectural heritage.

A fabric-first approach prioritised the retention of historic materials, while innovative conservation techniques and climate-responsive interventions have strengthened the building’s long-term resilience.

More than a conservation project, the transformation has opened the North Wing to the public for the first time in nearly 300 years, creating a welcoming heritage and wellbeing destination for hospital staff, patients, visitors and the wider community.

The award recognises the project’s excellence in conservation, craftsmanship and collaboration, demonstrating how thoughtful stewardship can secure the future of historic buildings while delivering lasting social value.

"The transformation of the Grade I listed North Wing at St Bartholomew's Hospital has opened one of London’s most significant eighteenth-century interiors as a heritage and wellbeing destination within Britain’s oldest working hospital. The project carefully conserved the Great Hall and Hogarth Stair, including William Hogarth’s monumental paintings and historic benefactor boards recording centuries of public support for healthcare in the city . Through restoration, interpretation and public engagement, the scheme has revealed this remarkable building as a welcoming space that enriches the wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors while securing the long-term stewardship of this nationally significant heritage asset."
