Auckland Castle wins three RIBA awards

Hailed by judges as a ‘valuable extension’ to Bishop Auckland, the series of interventions and restoration of the 900-year-old Grade I-listed Auckland Castle has been handed the top prize at the RIBA North East Awards, winning Best Building as well as the Conservation Award and Regional Award.

Once the palatial home of the Bishops of Durham, the Grade I listed castle sits in a former deer park. Acquired in 2012 by a trust, now called the ‘Auckland Project’, the castle and contents have been conserved and repaired by Purcell and are open to the public. Together with the new Faith Museum, designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects with Purcell as lead consultant, the project is a central focus for the town’s regeneration.

The Faith Museum houses a permanent collection representing 5,000 years of worship in the British Isles from prehistory to the modern day.
